We know that abuse instills fear in the victim and erodes their self-esteem no matter what type of abuse that the victim is dealing with. Abuse takes place in many forms such as Verbal/Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, and Sexual abuse. Any of will have psychological effects on the victim.
Verbal/ Emotional abuse is a form of abusive behavior involving the use of language. While oral communication is its most common form, verbal abuse may be expressed in the form of written word as well. Verbal/ Emotional abuse is a pattern of behavior that can seriously interfere with a person’s healthy emotional development. A single exposure to verbal assault can be enough to significantly affect a person’s self-esteem, emotional well-being, and physical state. Examples of most common forms of this type abuse in teenage relationships are……. . .Often times verbal abuse can lead to physical abuse.
- Name calling
- Intimidation
- Spreading rumors that are hurtful
- Controlling where a person can or can’t go and who with ( e.g. saying ” You aren’t going to that party with your friends without me”
- Embarrassing comments (e.g. saying in front of people ” Why do you laugh like that its stupid?’)
- Texting mean messages
Physical abuse is exactly the way it sounds. . The abuser gets mad and becomes aggressive with their partner. According to the national resource center on Domestic Violence 45% of girls reported that they had experienced physical violence while in a dating relationship.
- Hitting
- Shoving
- Pushing
- Grabbing
- Squeezing
- Biting
- Smacking
- Any other unwanted contact with the victim’s body
Sexual abuse is being forced or pressured to perform certain sexual acts and not wanting to. Many girls do this out of fear of losing their boyfriend or humiliation.
- Ignoring partner’s sexual choice(s) through pressure, manipulation, coercion (e.g. saying, “You’d do it if you loved me”)
- Rape: Forced penetration without consent (including use of intimidation, threats, weapons etc.)
- Sexual Assault: Forced sexual contact
- Sexual Harassment: Unwanted sexual attention
